What Is a Super Over in Cricket: Six Balls, Three Batters, Two Wickets

· 7 min read · Hisham Sarwar

A tie in a limited-overs match used to be the end of the story. Now it usually means six more balls each, played in front of a crowd that has stopped sitting down. What is a super over in cricket, in one line, is this: a one-over-per-side shootout to separate two teams who finished level. The rules are short. What they do to the two players in the middle is not, and that second part is what almost nobody writes down.

The short answer

A super over is a one-over-per-side tie-breaker used in limited-overs cricket. Each side bats a maximum of six legal balls, nominates three batters, and is all out as soon as two of them are dismissed. The team that batted second in the main match bats first in the super over, and whoever scores more runs wins.

The rules, in the order they come up

Who bats first, and who picks the end

The side that chased in the main match bats first in the super over. The fielding side chooses which end to bowl from. There is no fresh toss.

Three batters, two wickets

Each team nominates three batters. Because only three can bat, two dismissals end the innings. This is the clause most explanations mention and then walk straight past, and it is the one that decides how the six balls should actually be played. A normal over can absorb a wicket and carry on. A super over has one wicket of slack and then it is finished, whether four balls remain or one.

Six legal balls

Six legal deliveries, which is not the same as six deliveries. Wides and no-balls are extras and are re-bowled, so a loose over can run long and leak runs before a bat has been swung. Under T20 playing conditions a no-ball also brings a free hit, and in a six-ball innings a free hit is a very large share of the innings handed over for nothing.

If the super over is also tied

Since October 2019 the ICC has not used boundary count-back. Knockout matches and bilateral series play further super overs until somebody wins, with each one starting about five minutes after the last. A batter already dismissed cannot come back for the next one, so a side burns through its options quickly. Under the amended rule, group-stage matches can instead be recorded as a tie rather than going to extra overs.

What does not count

A super over sits outside the main match, so its runs and wickets do not go into career batting and bowling records. A bowler who concedes twenty off six balls in a super over does not carry it in his economy rate.

Why a super over is not just a short over

Rule lists answering what is a super over in cricket stop at the point above. Here is the part that matters if you ever have to play one, in a club game, a tape-ball final on a street, or a browser match against someone you have never met.

The dot ball problem inverts

In a twenty-over innings a dot ball costs you under one percent of your resources. In a super over it costs about seventeen percent. There is no rebuilding phase, no seeing off the good bowler, no next over to make it back. Every ball has to be a scoring attempt, which means shot selection that would be reckless at any other point in a match is correct here.

The two-wicket limit caps the aggression

At the same time, two wickets end everything. So you are asked to attack every ball while being unable to afford more than one failure. The resolution good players arrive at is low-risk aggression: hit into gaps instead of over the rope, run hard twos, and take the boundary option only off the ball that genuinely offers it. Two twos and a single beat a four and two dot balls, and they carry a fraction of the risk.

The bowler is solving a different problem

A bowler in a super over is not hunting wickets as a first objective. Wickets help, because two of them end the innings, but the primary job is to deny the scoring shot six times in a row. That pushes most bowlers towards one plan executed repeatedly: yorkers, or wide hard-length balls at a single target, with the field built around the shot they are inviting. The failure mode is variety. Six different deliveries give a batter six chances to find one he likes.

A short list of what tends to actually win super overs:

  1. One bowling plan, repeated, with the field set for it rather than against it.
  2. Running between the wickets rather than clearing the rope.
  3. A third batter who can hit from ball one, because he may face exactly one.
  4. No wides and no no-balls. Extras in a six-ball innings are the cheapest runs in cricket to give away.
  5. Clear calling. Most super over run outs come from a hesitation, not from brilliant fielding.

How to practise six-ball pressure

You cannot really practise a super over on its own, because the hard part is the scoreboard rather than the delivery. What you can practise is batting and bowling with a per-ball budget in your head, and the shorter the format, the closer you get to it.

That is the most useful reason to play short formats online. On howzatlive you can play cricket online in a live 1v1 against a real person: one of you bats, the other bowls, with in-match chat, and you pick 5, 10 or 20 overs in day or night conditions. In a 5-over game an over is twenty percent of the innings, so every over already behaves more like a super over than like anything in a long match. Thirty balls does not give you a rebuilding phase either.

Mechanically it is close to the right exercise. You are facing a human who can see your last three shots and adjust, which is the pressure a super over applies and the one thing no scripted opponent imitates well. You can take a quick match against whoever is online, or send a private link to a friend and settle it between the two of you. It runs in the browser in 3D, free, with no download and no install, so the gap between deciding to practise and facing the first ball is about a minute. Create a free account and your rated results start building a Scale badge from 0 to 10 after five rated matches, with wins over stronger opponents moving you up faster and repeated pairings against the same opponent damped so you cannot farm one person.

There are three bots as well, Gully, Club and Academy, and they are worth using to groove a bowling plan with nobody watching. Bot results are rated at half weight, capped at a few per day, and cannot carry you past Scale 3, so everything above that comes from real opponents. That is the right way round. The bot is where you build the plan. A human is where you find out whether it survives contact.

Common mix-ups

Most of the confusion about what is a super over in cricket comes from mixing it up with one of these.

  • A super over is not the DLS method. DLS adjusts a target when overs are lost. A super over breaks a tie after a full result.
  • A tied Test match is not followed by a super over. It stands as a tie.
  • A super over is not guaranteed in every competition. Some tournaments record group-stage ties instead of playing extra overs, so check the playing conditions before you assume.
  • A match is tied only when the scores finish level with the second innings complete, by overs or by wickets. A chasing side bowled out one run short has lost, not tied.

So, in one line

What is a super over in cricket: six legal balls, three nominated batters, two wickets and you are out, and the side that chased in the match bats first. Everything difficult about it comes from the two-wicket limit, which forces you to attack without being able to afford a mistake.

If you want to feel that squeeze rather than read about it, pick a 5-over match and see how long your plan holds up. Results stack up on the leaderboard, and there is more on short-format tactics across the blog.
